Grievance Issues

Grievances come up in all businesses – it’s hard for everybody to be pleased all of the time! On top of this, you may not always have somebody to hand who’s impartial and/or knows how to handle the grievance and you’ll want to contain any negative fall-out so as not to impact any of your other employees.

Absence Management Issues

Managing employee absence can be a hard situation to deal with. You need to get the balance right between demonstrating care for genuinely sick employees but also dealing with situations where you suspect that the employee’s absence might not be sickness-related at all.

There are different types of absence ranging from being late to not being in the business at all and also long-term absence in comparison to regularly occurring short-term absence. There’s also absence that needs to be treated differently if it occurs whilst an employee is on holiday or whilst an employee is pregnant and specific legislation that needs to be adhered to when dealing with these matters. All of these absences can cause a headache for your business and impose an additional burden on you and your other employees.

Some employers think their hands are tied if the employee is off sick as they fear they may contravene UK employment law by tackling employees creating issues due to their high level of absence.

We can help.

At Abbott HR, we’ll look to understand your situation, ensure alignment with your policy, review your issue against UK employment law and develop an absence improvement plan for you (potentially in line with an external occupational health company if you don’t have one yourself). Ultimately, we’ll support you in ensuring your employee is given the support they need where the absence is genuine and their absence is dramatically improved where not.

Poor Performance Issues

Poor performance is frustrating and costs your business time and money.

Sometimes managing poor performance seems to take so long, you put off addressing it and focus on the easier option of getting even more out of your higher performing employees.

Some employers are also under the illusion that there is little that can be done, particularly if the performance is sub-par but the employees haven’t done anything that constitutes gross misconduct.

We can help.

At Abbott HR, we’ll look to gather as much information as possible about the employee, their role and your expectations. We’ll also consider their performance over a longer-term basis to see if there might be a particular reason for the underperformance that could be addresses informally. In instances where this is not the case, we’ll implement robust performance improvement plans, regular reviews and manage this through to improved performance or, potentially termination.
